Fans of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are still processing CBS’s surprise decision to cancel the hit late-night program. However, things escalated further after former President Donald Trump shared the news on Truth Social.
Trump wrote, “I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.” The post quickly went viral, especially among Trump’s supporters.
But Colbert wasn’t going to stay quiet. In his opening monologue on Monday, Colbert fired back with a sharp message. “With all due respect, sir… Go f** yourself,”* he said. The F-word was bleeped out, but the audience exploded with applause and started chanting, “Stephen! Stephen! Stephen!” in support.
Colbert has never shied away from criticizing Trump, and many say that could’ve played a role in CBS’s decision. Others believe it was just part of a larger shift in late-night TV.
