The Strawberry Letter: Busting At The Seams

Subject: Busting at the seams

Dear Steve and Shirley, I am a 42-year-old married woman with a blended family with five children in total. My brother-in-law lives with us and we have 2 dogs. My brother-in-law picked up a stray cat that lives outside because one of the children is allergic to it. We have a four-bedroom house and we’re doing okay financially but we are living paycheck to paycheck. It would be great if my brother-in-law could pitch in and help out but he has some kind of mental issues that keep him from holding down a job. I would love to know what’s wrong with him since he’s living with us but my husband said it’s a longstanding illness that no one has ever asked him about. Well, that’s just fine and dandy… let’s just hope he keeps it under control while he’s sleeping on our couch. I’ve got my hands full with the children, so I don’t need another one to look after. Just when I was thinking I needed some help to get my business going on the side, my youngest brother told me he was moving closer to me. He said that he found an apartment on a website where 3 people were looking for one more roommate. I suggested he move in with us so he can help me start my nail business. He also works full-time and that income will help us out because Los Angeles is expensive. When I told my husband that my brother would be moving in, he shot the idea down before I could finish. I was so mad that I could scream. He said that our house is already busting at the seams. I told him his cray cray freeloading brother can leave and now he’s not speaking to me. How dare he choose his brother over mine? If we’re stacking up people in this house, how does he choose who gets to stay?
